It Makes Every Subsequent Specialization Faster
This is the part that’s easy to underestimate. Learning a new platform — a firewall vendor, a SASE product, a cloud provider’s networking service — takes considerably less time once you already understand the underlying concepts it’s built on. You’re mapping new terminology onto a mental model you already have, rather than building both the model and the terminology from scratch simultaneously.
What Actually Belongs in a “Fundamentals” Curriculum
Real fundamentals training should cover the OSI model (not as an academic exercise, but as a practical troubleshooting framework — “which layer is this problem actually happening at”), IP addressing and subnetting well enough to do it without a calculator, routing concepts, and enough hands-on packet-level understanding that concepts aren’t just memorized definitions.
